Abstract

Introduction: It is expected that professional athletes would have a greater muscular power than sedentary population and recreational athletes. However, to this date, there are no national studies proving this premise. Purpose: To compare maximal lower limb muscular power between Professional Athletes and Non-Athletes.

Hypothesis: Professional Athletes present a significantly higher muscle power than Non-Athletes.

Method: 78 young adults were divided into 2 groups according to their level of sport performance. Group 1: 51 Non- Athletes. Group 2: 27 Professional Athletes. Muscular power was assessed by a vertical one-leg jump, registered in an arithmetical platform (Watts). For each subject, the average between lower limbs was recorded. Statistical analysis included Student´s t-test (p<0.05).

Results: Group 1: Mean muscular power = 2365 ± 513 Watts. Group 2: Mean muscular power = 2357 ± 353 Watts. There was no statistical difference between both groups (p = 0.937).

Conclusions: The present study did not find a significant lower limb muscular power difference between Professional Athletes and Non-Athletes.
