Objective: To compare muscle strength levels and the risk of falling of active and inactive older adults in the communes of San Carlos and Chillán.
Materials and Methods: 33 older adults were categorized into active group (N = 18, 71.5 ± 5.58 years, 1.56 ± 0.08 m, 70.6 ± 10.9 kg.) and inactive group (N = 15, 76.9 ± 5.68 years, 1.55 ± 0.08 meters; 67.2 ± 9.99 kg.). The risk of falls was evaluated by Speed of March (SM), Unipodal Support (UPS) and Timed Up and Go (TUG). The grip force was determined by manual dynamometry.
Results: statistically significant differences were observed (p <0.05) in the TUG, SM and UPS tests in favor of the active group. The results of the active group in the evaluation of static and dynamic equilibrium classify within the normality ranges.
Conclusions: the performance of regular and systematic exercise (~ 180 min / week) decreases the risk of falls in older adults. However, these results cannot be extrapolated to the rest of the population.
