Retrospective study of injuries and illness in selected athletes, under 18 years

Introduction: The knowledge of the injury incidence and sports illness, allows to account for its characteristics, to establish plans of prevention in each sport.
Objective: To determine the history of sport injuries and illness that have suffered retrospectively in the last 5 years, the selected athletes of the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctic.
Material-Method: Retrospective-crosssectional study, with an intentional nonprobabilistic sample of 86 selected athletes from the Region of Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica, (47 men and 39 women) (age 15.9 ± 1.19 years), belonging to the disciplines of soccer (15), athletics (3), volleyball (34), judo (11), cycling (4), basketball (6) and swimming (13). For the collection of the information, a questionnaire of history of injuries and sports illness in the selected ones was made and applied, which they completed after signing the informed consent.
Results: A total of 118 lesions were found, classified as mild 51 (43.2%), moderate 32 (27.1%) and severe 35 (29.6%); 55.1% in competition and 44.9% in training. The most affected body areas were ankle (29.6%) and knee (21.1%). In the lesional mechanism, it stands out the poor support (23%) and the overtraining (18%). There were a total of 57 illness in the back (37.5%), knee (16%) and shoulder (16%).
Conclusions: This first retrospective study conducted in this Region, integrated multiple sports disciplines, allowing to obtain the incidence and characteristics of injuries and illness sport, highlighting the body area, severity and injury mechanism. These results will be the basis for establishing future prevention plans.
