INTRODUCTION: The rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is a devastating injury that usually occurs during sports involving jumps and changes of directions. There are several risk factors associated with this injury, so evaluating them in a preventive manner is the key to developing a specific training plan to try to reduce the risk of acquiring this injury. It has been shown that exercise-based training programs are able to reduce the risk of injury.
AIM: To assess the effectiveness of a battery of exercises to decrease dynamic knee valgus and increase the range of ankle dorsiflexion, both movements directly related to the risk of ACL injury.
DESIGN: Clinical study that evaluated 9 subjects of an amateur basketball team from Cataluña, Spain. We included female subjects, nulliparous women between 13 and 15 years old, who had not undergone surgery of the lower extremity.
MAIN MEASUREMENTS: Various factors that are associated with the risk of ACL injury were analyzed. The risk factors considered as modifiable were quantified. The variable ankle dorsiflexion was measured in weight load and the dynamic knee valgus was measured during the lateral step down test. After four weeks of training, these variables were reevaluated
RESULTS: For the analysis, a group with good adherence and another group with poor adherence to the protocol was compared. Participants in both groups improved the range of ankle dorsiflexion. Only the group with good adherence decreased the knee dynamic valgus angle. The results demonstrate the effectiveness of the battery of exercises in reducing the risk of ACL injury.
CONCLUSIONS: The results of the present study demonstrate the efficacy of exercise in influencing two risk factors associated with ACL injury
